about

“I suppose it’s one of life’s ironies that when the world seemed to’ve stopped (an astonishing and surreal thing in and of itself) — ostensibly granting an artist (assuming one’s finances would allow some time to float) uninterrupted studio time (What every artist wants!) — it could hardly be so straightforward.

The facts of the pandemic, the raising of consciousness around race, and the ongoing display of various abuse(s) of power, have only affirmed the unjust hierarchy the foundation our society is built upon. The newfound awareness of this by some and the stubborn denial of this by others means our country is, in effect, being drawn and quartered — pulled in opposing directions and very much threatening to rip apart entirely. I had to ask myself, then, if only myself ... ’Can the creative act be seen as an act of vanity? Does an upstanding citizen cordon themselves in a studio, creating imagined worlds with so much work to be done?’ And so, though I could’ve only dreamt of having the luxury of time to simply make work without having to report to work, I nearly abandoned all attempts at writing, feeling a sense of futility in the project itself. Instead I took to reading, and discussing, looking for guidance.

And yet, something would nag at me. Hasn’t music provided so much solace throughout history, a balm, a place to find relief and uplift? Is giving up on music allowing those who resent hope to have their own victory? I felt a strange need to "tap into something"— as if it were a kind of test. Initially, a few pieces came which emphasized solace, lament … things I wanted to express … but weren't quite right. Then, for a few moments, I was able to tune into something, a kind of polygon emotion. I chose to move with it. Is it a lament? An aspiration? A corridor? I’m not sure. Does it contain a kind of optimism? In spite of things, I believe — I hope — it does. And other things too.”
